From The Pasture with Hired Hand, Episode 9: Developing A Plan. In this episode, we’re talking with Brian Brett from Brett Ranch who raises Registered Texas Longhorns in Brownwood, TX. Brian has been raising Longhorns for roughly 10 years and has developed quite the plan that made his herd what it is today.
What began as a 3 Longhorn starter herd in 2009 turned to 20 head, then to 50 head, now to 80 head. Brett says that once they started attending Longhorns sales, they realized they needed more "cow power" and had to develop a real plan for their herd. He started by asking himself, "How am I going to make a name for myself in Longhorns?" and the rest is a super interesting story of line-breeding, genetics, and a lot of math.
