Longhorn of the Month: Doherty 6

The industry lost a great female on Christmas day 2010 when the renowned female, Doherty 6, died at the ranch of John and Ursula Allen in Harper, Texas. A 1991 model, the Frank Doherty bred cow was sired by Double Tex and out of Ranger’s Monies. Her dam’s pedigree traced back to the well-known Ranger’s Ranch Hand bull. The progeny of Doherty 6 have been very successful in the sale ring over the years. Two of her daughters are over 80” TTT. Her 2000 daughter, Allen’s 83, by Equalizer 26/5 was consigned by Red McCombs Ranches at the 2007 Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale, and sold for $64,000. She was sold again in the 2009 Hudson Valentine Invitational Sale for $50,000. Phenomenal Dorthy, a 1997 Phenomenon daughter, sold for $100,000 to Ron Marquess and partners. Another daughter, Doherty’s Blossom is over 77” TTT, and she has a son, Maximizer, who is approaching 70” TTT.
Recognizing the superior production of Doherty 6, the Allens have retained several of her offspring in their herd. “She was a mainstay of our breeding program for many years. We can’t begin to guess how much value her genetics have contributed in the past, and through her offspring, in the future,” says John. “She was Ursula’s favorite cow, and we’ll miss seeing her in the pasture.”
